Homemade Flour Tortillas

Ingredients:

4 C flour

1.5 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

6 Tbsp shortening

1.5 C water


Directions:

  1. Mix all dry ingredients in a medium bowl with a fork. Add in shortening, working it in with the fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs

  2. Add water into mixture and continue to work it into a dough with the fork

  3. Place dough on floured surface and knead for 4-5 minutes until dough is smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest for 20 minutes

  4. Divide dough into 12 equal portions

  5. Roll out each portion into a 6-7" circle, or, use a tortilla press

  6. Cook tortillas in pan over medium heat for about 2 minutes on each side or until puffed and spots of brown start to show up. Flip and repeat on other side

  7. Remove from pan and place on a plate, covered with a towel or tin foil to maintain heat and moisture
